How to Participate:      Tourist      Citizen      Group      World      Mailing List

Your first step is to download the iUni browser onto a PC running Windows 9x/NT/2000. For IUB and IUPUI, you may use the iUni browser already installed in UITS computing clusters. This is not the same software as Internet Explorer or Netscape.

Try iUni as a tourist:
  • As an iUni tourist, you will have 24/7 access to most (if not all) iUni worlds.
  • You can become a tourist simply by downloading the iUni browser and starting it.
  • Enter a temporary (this session only) userid and valid email address.

Become an iUni citizen:
  • As an iUni citizen, you will have 24/7 access to most (if not all) iUni worlds and building privileges (if allowed in that world).
  • To request citizenship, send an email to iuni-admin-l@listserv.indiana.edu with the following information about yourself::
    • Full name
    • Email (this will be our primary means of contact)
    • A brief description of your interest in iUni (i.e. class project or report)
  • Once you hear back, you may login to iUni using the citizen button of the iUni browser at any time.
  • At any one time, there are a maximum of 100 users (tourists and citizens) that may be logged on to iUni. In the event that you cannot get access for this reason, try again at a later time. And, please be considerate and log out if you are not going to be active in the universe.

Request iUni citizenship for your class or group:
  • As an iUni citizen, you will have 24/7 access to most (if not all) iUni worlds and building privileges (if allowed in that world).
  • To request multiple citizenships, send an email to iuni-admin-l@listserv.indiana.edu with the following information about yourself::
    • Full name
    • Email (this will be our primary means of contact)
    • Number of requested citizenships
    • A brief description of your interest in iUni
  • Once you hear back, you will receive a list of citizenship numbers and passwords. Assign them as you wish. Each student can change their username once inside iUni.
  • Please inform your group that at any one time, there are a maximum of 100 users (tourists and citizens) that may be logged on to iUni. In the event that you cannot get access for this reason, try again at a later time. And, please be considerate and log out if you are not going to be active in the universe.

Obtain your own world:
  • To qualify for participation in the iUni Universe project, you must be a faculty/staff member at Indiana University, or a graduate student under the supervision of a faculty/staff member.
  • Participants are required to participate regularly in iUni's community events, dialogues, and are encouraged to publish and present research and findings from activities in iUni. Each world is required to host at least one open house every year. After one year a world can be renewed based on a one page summary and sufficient building and visiting activity demonstrated.
  • There is a limited amount of virtual real estate available within the iUni universe; therefore, world creation must be approved by a small committee of iUni  faculty, staff, and graduate students. Individual worlds are targeted at faculty and graduate students that can demonstrate either a large citizen userbase (i.e. online course instruction) or the need for control over their own space (i.e. graduate thesis/dissertation). Currently, there are three different world sizes available: (a) 100 x 100 meters, (b) 200 x 200 meters, and (c) 400 x 400 meters. If you are in doubt of how much space you need, go conservatively and/or visit and talk to other iUni world owners.
  • To request a world, send an email to iuni-admin-l@listserv.indiana.edu with the following information about yourself (or the project coordinator):
    • Full name
    • Title
    • Department/school
    • Campus
    • Mailing address
    • Phone number
    • Email address (this will be our primary means of contact)
    • Requested world name (2-8 characters, no special characters such as !@#$%)
    • Requested world size (100x100, 200x200 or 400x400)
    • Detailed project description - include information on intended use of iUni in your project, research, or course. Attach documentation and curriculum links where possible.
    • Estimated number of users
  • Your proposal will be considered by the iUni committee and responded to ASAP. Please allow at least 2 weeks.
  • Upon approval, you will be added to the iUni mailing list.
